Ignis Solus

A masterpiece of machinima animation, Ignis Solus (Latin for “Burn Alone”) uses the colorful and cartoony Team Fortress 2 game engine to weave a stirring tale of solitude and of the peculiar connection with strangers one can experience within the context of a multiplayer action game.

Directed by [Lit Fuse Films]’s Zachariah Scott with a beautiful score by Lars Erik FJøsne, this silent animated comedy short proves that great art can be achieved from such unlikely material as a multi-player shoot-em-up game. It also is a great showcase for Team Fortress 2’s gorgeous graphics, reminiscent of Pixar’s feature films, such as The Incredibles.

Anyone who ever played a multi-player game will surely feel for this demolition man as he tries to have fun all alone in a deserted “Capture the flag” level. This story is also a great way for people unfamiliar with the concept of multi-player games (or “Newbies”), to understand the peculiar dynamic of playing with strangers and having fun by repeatedly murdering each-other virtually.

(Note: there is some violence as we see a cartoon character get shot at and be incinerated by a flame-thrower.)
